How to Measure a Torsion Spring
Get Accurate Measurements for Your Spring: A step-by-step guide to ensure you purchase the right size spring.

Wire Size
To get your wire size, measure 10 coils to the nearest 1/16". Change the fraction into a decimal and divide by 10. For a more accurate measurement; start at the 1" mark on your ruler.

Inside Diameter
Measure the inside diameter of the spring.

Length
Measure the overall length of the spring, excluding the end cones. Include the spring wire that is on the cones.

Spring Wind
Use the diagram to determine if your spring is a left hand (LHW) or right hand (RHW) wound spring.

Spring Wire Chart
Use the chart to identify your wire size.

Differing the Wind
From inside the garage door, the spring located on the left side is right-hand wound (R/H) and the spring located on the right side is left-hand wound (L/H).
